We are the youth we'll take your facism away
We are the youth apologize for another day
We are the youth and politicians are so sure
We are the youth and we are knocking on death's door
Never knew we were livin' in the world with a mind that could be so sure
Never knew we were livin' in the world with a mind that could be so small
Never knew we were livin' in the world and the world is an open court
Maybe we don't wanna live in a world where innocence is so short
--Anthem for the Year 2000, Silverchair
When we say we love a country or a nation, what does that really mean?
Do we enjoy the view of the country's tourist attractions?
Are we proud of what the nation has or has achieved?
Or are we, as All Saint put it, Ready Willing and Able to defend the existance, freedom and ideology of that we say we love?
Every day I see people out there defending, but often I don't see whose freedom or what kind of twisted ideology they are fighting for.
Humans are no longer mere resources. We are considered as capital. Thus, taking citizens as building blocks of a nation's measure, I'd say my countrymen's behavior is definitely not the reason for my love. Apparently, we have no shame, no longer curteous and considered as one of the most crooked (Sparrow would love this) pirate countries. Sure, there is the pride on Science Olimpiade or International Choir champions and whatnot. However, in the media frenzy surrounding where the camera-hungry attention-seeking so-called celebrities overshadow what is left of our legions of cultural ambassadors, one may ask 'where is the love?' too many times.
I miss the feeling of watching Rexy sobbed through "Indonesia Raya" in Atlanta. Call me a pessimist, but even though some people have great faith in the future of this struggling nation, I think it's still a very long way to go especially with the current state of mentality. I just wish I could live to the day when prosperity reigns in this land I call home.
Happy 61th Anniversary, Indonesia!
Rumahku, tempat berpulangku..
